1950 Cub Tractor

I have a what it think is a 1950 cub. Was a gift from my mother-in-law. It ran about 2 years ago. I have replace the plugs, cleaned the carberator, and replace the dist cap. It will not crank, but does backfire when the motor turns over. Also, it has been converted to 12 volt. Any suggestions how to get this tractor running?
