We've taken a lot of heat from "purists" in some circles over my (now) 17 year old stepson's '37 Allis WC. I guess it won't ever win any prizes, but that wasn't what we had in mind anyway. It's the only old mechanical thing he has shown any interest in, and better than NIntendo as far as I'm concerned. We spent quite a few hours together (only sometimes butting heads), trying to get it as far as it has come.

"The Orange Beast" has rippled sheetmetal with old goober buzz box welded patches. It also has couple minor leaks (including a head gasket, which I need to get to this spring). Its also got the wrong (WD)manifold, wrong ('38up) wheels, incorrect tires, and "close enough" paint that the boy applied over dirt & grease inna couple spots, because he was in a hurry... He got some decals for his birthday last year, and applied em himself, so they're a bit drunk as well. But hey, it usually starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull....(Unless he's forgotten to turn on the gas)
Now what does this mean? Nothing except that I remember back a few years ago (about 20 or 25) when this tractor would have been considered an "average" restoration. rather than an object of scorn. It sure doesn't look like another overgrown Ertl toy, but the boy is pretty happy with it. Maybe he'll decide to do it "right" someplace down the road, and maybe not.

Rather than conform, I am seriously considering finishing off the retro-resto look by hand painting the lettering, either over top of the decals or by using them as a stencil.

IMHO, if somebody is REALLY offended by it they're quite welcome to buy the beast (they better offer at LEAST twice market value) and redo it to suit themselves.
