I had some form of Direct TV since it first came out. Started as "Prime Star" in my area. Before that I had a home made 14' wood and chickenwire satellite dish.
I just cancelled a few months ago. Since the digital changeover in June, TV reception over-the-air has become absolutely amazing. I'm 60 miles from any transmitter and mountains block my house all the way around. Since 1979, I could not get even one TV channel with an antenna. I now get over 20 channels any many are HD. I did NOT get HD from Direct TV, since it's an exta cost option, not standard. I have four other rural and very remote properties. Two in nothern Michigan, one on the Tug Hill Plateau in NY, and the other in the middle of the Adirondack Park in NY. I'm getting digital TV by antenna at all of them. Here in New York I get VHF and UHF from 70 miles away. In Michigan I get several from 130 miles away. Have you checked your area for TV reception? All you have to do is go to TVFool.com and type in you address or GPS coordintates and it will give you a map of what is available by antenna.
As to Interntet by satellite - I've got Hughes.net. It costs $60 per month and stops workking now and then a few minutes at a time. It's much faster then dial-up for downloaded, but extremely slow for uploading. I'd like to get rid of it, but don't want to go back to dial-up. I often find large tech manuals online that I download, which I could never do with dial-up. It has unlimited downloads IF done in the middle of the night. If I do too much during the day, I get shut down. Daytime limit is 100 MBs.
