First off, welcome to the world of N Series Ford Tractors! Secondly, get yourself an I&T FO-4 shop manual. They are available almost everywhere including the sponsors of this board to the left. It will be the best $25 you will ever spend on your tractor. Now, as for starting it. Did you change the oil filter? It is in the round cannister forward of the starter on the left. How much oil did you put in when you changed it? The crankcase is supposed to have 6 quarts of oil. After putting in the filter, I usually pour oil in the filter cannister till it won't hold anymore. Some people say this is unnecessary, but it makes me feel better :-) Now Fuel. Remove the fuel line from the brass elbow at the carb. Turn on the gas (2 full turns for main, and fully open for the 1 gallon reserve) and see how fast the gas pours from the line. Should be a steady stream about as hard as a good healthy pee. If not, you will have to clean the screens. There are 2 at the fuel shutoff valve. One above the sediment bowl, and one inside the tank that you will have to remove the valve from the tank to get to. If you have to go this far, it is probably a good idea to flush the tank before reassembly. There is also a third screen in the brass elbow on the carb. Unscrew the elbow from the carb and clean this one too. Now Air: Remove the cup from the breather. There are 2 clips that hold it to the body. Fill the cup to the line with the same oil that you have in the engine. Pull the plugs one at a time, and put a teaspoon of oil or Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder. Make sure that you do not get the firing order messed up. It is 1,2,4,3 counter clockwise on the front mount distributor. Put all the plugs, and wires back and unhook the breather tube from the carb. With the fuel valve and the key both shut off, put your hand over the air intake and turn the motor a couple turns with the starter. You should feel some serious suction on your palm. If you feel suction, rehook the breather tube, turn on the gas, turn on the key, and if you have spark to those plugs, you should be good to go! If not :-( repost on the N Board and we will get you going. Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul
