I went through the same thing with my 8N. I was able to resolve the fuel problem to satisify myself that the fuel system was ok. I ran a check on the distributer and there was excessive play in the distributer shaft and bushing. Had that fixed and bought a new coil (mine sets on top of the distributer)and the problems went away. I put to old coil back on and it also worked fine. Now have a spare coil. I assume the problem was with the wobble in the distributer shaft causing variable point gap. On my John Deeres I've had coils seperate when they get worm and just quit running - wait for them to cool down and the tractor would start and run fine. Hope this helps you to get that 8N back in operation.

: : I am having trouble with my 8N.It can be hard to start, but usually will run.Lately it has a tendecy to just cut off in the middle of running.I am wondering if the timing chain is getting stretched or if it could be a carburator or distributor problem.Any suggestions on how to track it down?
: Remove hose on inlet side of carb, when the motor
: starts to die give it a little shot of starting fluid,if it picks up and
: runs better, you have a fuel system problem. Has it been
: converted from 6V to 12volt? If you are running 12v
: make sure you have a 12v coil with built in resistor
: or a resistor between the hot wire going to the coil
: and the coil.
