The 53rd annual Rock River Thresheree will be held during Labor Day weekend, Friday Sept. 4th through Monday Sept. 7th 2009 in southern Wisconsin midway between Janesville and Edgerton along Hwy 51 and Cty Tk M. Featured this year are Odd ball and Orphan tractors and engines, including high crop and orchard tractors.
The showgrounds opens at 8:00AM each day, with breakfast available. Most activities run until 5:00PM.
Start off by seeing demonstrations of grain threshing from one of our many antique threshing machines that continue all day. You can see plowing with both steam and gas powered tractors using our 12-bottom gangplow. We also feature multiple corn harvesting demonstrations. Fresh potatoes are available for you to collect while they are being dug, and you can take them home. Sorghum syrup will be made too. Cutting and shocking grain, early 1900’s style, is a new demonstration that is added for this year.
We are happy to feature one of the largest flea markets in southern WI. You can explore the 5 acres for that treasure or souvenir. A large variety of antiques, crafts, and collectibles are available.
Steam Engines and tractor are abundant. At 3:00PM the daily highlight is the “Parade of Power”. Steam engines, tractors, equipment and antique farm machinery parade though our natural amphitheater. During this you can see many of the 20 steam engines and 500 tractors of every size and model that are shown by 800 some people who exhibit each year.
You can take a ride on our steam-powered locomotive, The Rock River Cannonball. Originally built as a narrow gauge German switch engine, it now gives rides around the 1 ½ mile track that circles the park.
One of the favorite demonstrations is the pile driver. This is one of the last known steam operated drivers still in operation, driving 18” diameter logs into the ground.
The Museum of industry and Agriculture houses a collection of large stationary steam engines that run during the day. The big Worthington Diesel operates at times throughout the day. We also have a large collection of Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines. The building is home to our steam calliope too. Stop next door and see the Rock River IornWerks. It features a working machine shop of a by-gone era.
An early 1900’s Blacksmith shop shows off the skills of some of the best blacksmiths left in the state all day long. Additionally, the crafts of the wheelwright and woodwrights are presented. A steam-powered sawmill is in operation through out the day, turning logs into lumber. There is also see a shingle mill cut cedar shingles.
There will be classic construction equipment used and displayed on the grounds. Antique and classic cars and trucks are on display for your enjoyment also. We have numerous hand built scale models on display.
This year we have expanded our children’s activities. We have brought back the popular pedal pull. This are held Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at 11:00. There are classes up to 100 pounds, and prizes for the winners. New for this year is a corn box to play in, similar to a sandbox, but filled with corn. Winding and weaving along the road is the barrel train, a fun ride. We are also offering children the chance to drive their first tractor at the show, along with a tractor rodeo.
After all this you might be hungry. Foods that suit everyone’s taste are located around the park. While having a bite to eat, why not listen to some good music. Saturday, Sunday and Monday we feature music from 11:30 to 1:30. You also might want take home some fresh ground corn meal and buckwheat, available in the Gristmill.
There is ample free parking, with shuttle service provided to take you to the center of the activities. You can also tour the ground with our in-park shuttle. Church services are held Sunday morning.
Plan to spend the day with us and enjoy the activities for only $6.00 for adults and $1.00 for children 6-12. Under 6 is free. Receive $1 off Adult admission with non-perishable food donation. Friday is seniors’ day, $5 admission for all seionors.
Camping is available to exhibitors.
Hope to see you there!
