Those guys are 100% right about non detergent and filters. The detergent oil is supposed to carry contaminants to the filter where they are removed. If there is no filter it all circulates through the engine. Look at any modern engine - the return oil goes to the sump, through the pump and to the filter. The old engines with no filter or maybe a partial flow like that used on my old Cases just doesn't work that way. The non detergent let the heavies settle out before returning to the engine (ideally). Actually some circulated, but not anything like a modern oil would carry. Robert
