A good example of the relative safety of modern vs. antique tractors is rollover protection. Early tractors pulled implements from the drawbar. Many farmers were killed in rollover accidents resulting from the front end of the tractor rising up and falling back over the operator. The "Ferguson System" (Ford 9N, 1929) introduced integrated mounting of the implement on the tractor. This helped to reduce the number of rollover accidents. The three-point hitch (Ford 8N, 1948) was an improvement on the Ferguson system. In the 50's, Ford introduced "draft control", which would automatically raise the implement if it hit an obstruction. It wasn't until the 1970's that ROPS cages and seat belts were required on tractors.
