I find it necessary to disagree with B C as far as precombustion chambers are concerned,perkins and caterpillar used these on earlier engines and they tend to rattle at idle.the cat 3406 engine used both precombustion chambers and direct injection.the 3406 dit engines run quieter like cummins truck engines.it is true that the rattleing depends alot on combustion chamber design.john deere uses firedam pistons in most of their engines and the fuel is injected directly toward the firedam.another reason for the knock is leaking or fouled nozzles
