I had the same thing happened with my Ford 4000. You will need to split the tractor all right, but you will want to replace the ring gear as the previous poster said. The ring gear will be damaged from being to far from the starter. You might need a new starter drive also. Your New Holland dealer will have a replacement ring gear. Any automotive machine shop can replace it if you don't have a torch. This is a cheap repair, but a fair amount of work. You might want to do the clutch, too, while you have the tractor split.
