Alan, As I recall, your transmission uses collars to engage the gears. You will have a large helical toothed gear with a small toothed pattern on the side of it. The collar may not be completely engaging because: 1) The linkage is not moving the collar totally over the straight-cut gear; 2) The internal teeth on the collar could be worn back far enough that they are not fully engaging. 3) The straight-cut teeth are worn so much that they are not engaging straight onto the teeth on the collar. 4) The detent in your shifter is not holding the collar over the straight-cut gear. It should be a good positive snap into position feel. 5) The fork moving the collar has slipped on the shifter rail. 6) The fork or groove in the collar has worn to not allow full engagement. 7) The shift lever ball at the bottom where it fits into a slot on the fork is either worn down or the slot has be enlarged. 8) All of the above. Worst case worn straight cut gears or worn straight gears in the collar. This mean you'll have to take apart the transmission. Worn lever you can repair by removing from the top. Hope this help.
