Jim, I have a JD 40 that developed the same problem. The collar that holds the throw-out bearing behind the pressure plate is where my problem originates. It has partially detached from the clutch rocker arm that goes thru the bellhousing horizontally and will occasionally bind on the engine output shaft to the transmission. It was only an annoyance for a while because I could double-clutch and make it disengage. But it got worse and it is hard to stop that chugging two cylinder when you get to the front of the trailer you are loading it on and push the clutch and it starts to climb over the front of the trailer. I am planning to split mine in two as clooney described. It's not a very bad job.
