IHank's way will work, but as he said you run the risk of hurting the tractor/battery. My way will work too, but you run the risk of running yourself over. You must be very careful with either method. My way is to hook the cables to your truck 12 volt battery, and then hook one of the cables to a good contact on the tractor such as a bare spot on the running board. At this point, MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS OUT OF GEAR!!! You can also 'lock' your brakes for this too. Turn on the key/switch and then touch the other cable to the post on the starter until the motor fires. Either have someone pull the choke for you, or do a 2 arm stretch. This leaves the solenoid, battery and coil out of the 'loop' of the 12 volt juice. The starter does not care about the polarity of the connections and will work no matter which way you hook up the cables. The only 'drawback' in this is that there has to be enough juice left in the 6 volt battery to supply energy to the coil to produce the sparks. This can be done even if there is not enough juice to turn the starter with the 6 volt, as it is much easier to produce a sufficient spark than it is to turn the starter and all that heavy metal. JUST MAKE SURE THAT THE TRACTOR IS OUT OF GEAR!
You can lock the brakes and block down the clutch too. When you jump this way you are bypassing the safety interlock in the starter button...
