Methanol has roughly 50% of the BTU of gasoline and does require different carburetor, to pass the high volume of fuel.

Ethanol has about 66% of the BTU of gasoline and performs about the same as propane once the stuff is in vapor state.

Methanol, ethanol, and propane, all allow building the IC engine with a very high compression ratio and doing some agressive ignition strategies.

As a petro-chemically poisioned and still recovering person, I openly admit my fear of methanol and recommend that the promoters of methanol and MTBE be forced to drink some.

Long ago, I did much experimental work with 180 proof ethanol. My old 8N Ford went from 18 HP to 22 HP on the dyno. All the hired dyno tech did (not me, I was in "hands off" mode) was adjust the main mixture screw and the spark timing.

Around 1990 I got involved with some undergrad research efforts at Iowa State Univ. It involved lots of road testing with 195 proof ethanol as hot vapor, and several electronic fuel injected systems.

Yes, we rural Americans have the potential to fuel all our needs. If and when "the crunch comes", just like in the early 1940's, we can and will do it. Between now and then we need to get rid of BATF and all the legislation enabling them jack booted thugs.
