Most vane pumps are self-adjusting and take up for wear because most have spring loaded vanes that expand as housings wear or do so by centrifugal force.
All rotary fuel injection pumps have built in vane pumps and they virtually last forever. An injection pump IS a hydraulic pump, just a bit fancier and has to pump thinner oil.
Gear pumps have no self-adjust feature. Once worn, they go in the scrap heap.
That being said, gear pumps tend to be cheaper and last a long time with good oil.
