Tom, I plant about 3 acres in corn and weed it with a Ferguson 3 pt cultivator on the back of an 8N. It is adjustable so that the shovels dig up the soil between the rows and the small angled disc on either side then pile the loose dirt up around the base of the stalks to cover those weeds in between. It works okay but not perfect. It'll kill about 75% of the weeds considering that the 8N doesn't allow cultivation past about 24" height of the corn or so. This method is no longer used because herbicides are more thorough and requires no additional field time/tractor passes. You will damage some crop with this old arrangement but proper forsight in spacing the tractor tires/row crop planting/cultivator shovels, it will work. For example, our 8N is 60" wide outside to outside on the tires so center to center is about 52". I adjusted my corn planter to 26" centers to that this will allow the tires to track down the center of 2 rows. The shovels dig up the tire marks. I know that the traditional stalk centers is usually 30", 36", or 38" to get about 20,000 plants/acre, but I grow for wildlife and not for harvest. My 50lb bag of seed just covered 3 acres so actually I'm at about 26,000 plants/acre. The results this year is very, very good. The stalks are so thick that the remaining weeds have had little or no effect.
