Fred, I don't what type of regulator that you have. Some were 2 coils and some were three. Take off the cover and one of them will pull the flapper toward the electromagnetic coil. There usually is a screw that adjusts the spring tension, sometimes the tab holding the spring may have to be bent which makes it trial and error. Set the engine speed at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Press the contacts and watch the voltage on a volt meter or the amp meter (better to use a volt meter). It should charge 8-10 volts. Adjust the spring tension to give about 9 volts when running at the fast speed. I can't describe it any better without looking at it. It's been about 25 years ago, and since then any time a charging system fails, I convert it to a 12 volt GM alternator. Ken McWilliams
