There are still variations among states. The CDL law for anything with a GCVWR of over 26,001 is Federal. Some states have signs at weigh stations indicating ALL pickups and trailers (recreational vehicles exempted) must stop. Weight may not be a problem,,, but safety chains, functional brakes, functional break-away brakes, functional turn lights and trailer brake lights and properly secured loads are subject to scrutiny by DOT officials. If your GCVWR is over the minimum for a CDL, licensing makes no difference (commercial plates vs. farm plates)(unless you are within a 150 mile radius of the farm or ranch) The CDL law applies and a valid CDL, health certificate, log book... etc. are all fair game with the enforcement officer. I was detained one time in Iowa for over 2 hours...DOT enforcement officers went over the pickup and gooseneck trailer with a fine tooth comb... to the point of having me drive off of the pavement onto gravel and applying the brakes while they observed. Driver's license, proof of insurance, bill of sale for the tractor were all checked with DMV, even the name and telephone number on the Bill of Sale were called and checked for it's validity. I took it all in stride... in the name of safety. I was finally cleared and sent on my way.
Keep in mind.. this was performed by Iowa DOT enforcement personnel at a weigh station... not the Iowa State Patrol.
