I always said if I could have a Cummins pushin' an Allison in a Ford, that'd be the truck for me.
I chickened out on the Allison and Ford was in the middle of their 6.0 woes at the time I was buyin', so I wound up with an '03 Ram 3500, HO CUmmins (there were three variants available that year)long cab and bed, 4WD, NV5600 (I guess the newer six speed is a Getrag), 3.73 single rear and added an exhaust brake not long after I got it.
135k so far, about 60k of it towing, and I can't complain too much about the repairs, though I might feel differently if I hadn't bought the extended 100k warranty. No issues with the Cummins at all so far. U-joint on the left front axle started clickin' at 35k. They destroyed the hub/bearing unit while replacing it, so I got a new one that's still going fine. RF U-joint started failin' not long later. They saved the hub/bearing that time, but it gave out just out of warranty. Only other has been U joints in the rear driveshaft. First time was under warranty and they replaced the whole danged shaft. Middle u-joint in that went bad just a short while ago. I've got a greasable one back in its place. Don't know, but I've gotta feelin' the exhaust brake might be a little harder on u-joints??? But it's well worth havin'.
