You can get along without live PTO but life is a lot easier with it. Usually if you don't have live PTO you don't have live hydraulics either. A tractor with a loader is much handier with live hydraulics. Baling is easier with live PTO if you get to a heavy spot as you can just push in the clutch so you don't overload the baler then let the clutch out and go again. I grew on tractors without live PTO and believe me, I would get live PTO.
