Judging from the wording of your question, it is clear to me that you have little experience with burning coal. "Nuggets" and "pellets" are not in the coal lexicon.
The best forum for coal burning is accessed at the link below. There is one thread devoted to recent prices paid by users. Freight and dealer markup can double the cost of coal compared to driving to the "breaker" and placing your truck under their conveyor.
Anthracite (best and more expensive) requires equipment designed for that type. Bituminous (lotsa smoke and less heat) can be burned in a wood stove in a pinch.
Free coal is available in some parts of the country by placing want ads at Craigslist. I have shoveled over 18 tons of Anthracite from seven cellars. I am located outside of Boston. Nearly all the coal was at least 50 years old.
It is unlikely you will find any anthracite for sale outside of a 500 mile radius of Northeast PA. Bituminous is available in many states.
