1010 is a pretty good starting diesel when everything is right. In fact, it will outstart some later direct-injected Deeres if it is set-up correctly (as long as you let the glow-plugs heat and work the primer properly). Most aren't setup right anymore, especially now that they are almost 50 years old.
#1 it is an indirect-injected diesel - perhaps the only one Deere ever made in the USA (1010/2010 series). So, it must have working glow plugs. Wellman (WAP British) sells them for $20-$25 each. OEM Deere plugs often cost twice that and they are cheap and made in China.
#2 it is the first Deere ever to use a rotary injection pump and early models don't pump enough fuel at cranking speed for good cold starting. That's what the hand-primer pump is for. If your 1010 doesn't have a working primer-pump, it's not going to start well in very cold temps.
New primer pumps are still available from Deere, but they cost a fortune. Seems it wouldn't be too hard to make one, or swap something else in there. Deere pump is AT15807 and cost over $500.
