If a machine is really cheap, there is always a reason why. A skid steer can be a money pit like a crawler. Not usually as bad but there are a lot of things that can go wrong and they need proper maintenance as well. I had to put a new wheel motor in my skid steer because it was leaking oil into the chain case. When the motor was taken apart, they said it would be cheaper to replace than to repair. I was hoping it just needed new seals. $2600 later and it's fixed. I should mention that I bought my machine new in 1994 and it only has 3500 hours on it. I have done regular maintenance and replaced the hydraulic filter every oil change for the first 1500 hours and about every second or third oil change after that. Some machines, the hyd. filter never gets changed. I'm just trying to point out that even a newer well cared for machine can break down for no apparent reason. I also had to have new pins and bushings put in for the bucket linkage at 2800 hours. This is common as they work more in the dirt. I've seen machines that have never seen grease wear out the pins and bushings in less than 500 hours. In my honest opinion, I don't think you'd find a good reliable skid steer for $3500. The last thing you need is for it to break down in the middle of clearing snow right after a blizzard. I have a 1965 MF 135 tractor with a loader and it is the most reliable and trouble free machine I have. It's had to have stuff fixed in the past but being a simpler machine than a skid steer, there's less to go wrong. You would have a better chance of getting a decent tractor with a 3pt. hitch/loader for $3500 than a skid steer. Hope this helps. Dave
