To the best of my understanding Doug A has the most correct answer. All others had at sometime a third party engine except for Sheppard. They taylor made each one of their tractors and when done they would hook it to a trailer and pull it up a slag heap. If it didn't perform to their expectations they tore it down and started over until it pulled to their satisfaction. Relatively few were made ahead and sent out to dealers to sell as stock. There may be a couple of other small line makes that also made the entire line themselves, but the big boys were in business to stay in business and that was bottom line. Some were just a little better/luckier than others.
