Definately use non-detergent oil in a engine that has been run on non-detergent oil. ND oil will not suspend engine deposits. This is one of the reasons why some old engines have so much sludge in them. The det. oil will suspend particles and clean your engine, but in a engine that has always had det oil the particles will be very small. The problem comes in when the det.oil starts to clean a dirty engine, it may loosen large chunks of sludge that are to big to pass through the various passageways in the engine and cause catastrofic engine failure. I think this is why some engines have large drain plugs so that when the oil is changed you can get at some of the sludge. I had a old Ford flat head V-8 that when I first changed the oil after buying the vehicle, I found that it had almost an inch of sludge in the pan. Why it never starved for oil is anybodys guess. Just my two Cents, Good luck !! Bill in Mich
