Every brand has it's good models and bad. I like all good tractors. The brand is up to you but the size is another thing. You probably want something with a wide front end as compared to tri-cycle gear for field use. A wide front will give you more stability. I have 5 acres and about 1000' of private road that needs regular attention, though we seldom get snow. I'm also doing a lot of clearing and will be mowing over an acre of grass. I found the horse power size that I like most is the 30 to 40 h.p. range. Enough to do what I need but not too heavy to run over the field grass. If you plan on mowing "pretty" lawn, I'd suggest also getting a riding lawn mower or a lite tractor (like an Alice Chalmers-B or IH-Cub, with a belly mower.) You'll want a live PTO, good hydraulics and a 3 point hitch. For safety concerns, get a ROPS or have one added to your older tractor. That roll over protection system may save your life someday as tractor roll-overs are real dangerous. My MF-2135 has a low center of gravity and wide front and a ROPS is high on the "get one" list. As for implements, you will have to decide between a back blade or box scraper for your road. The blade will work well for snow removal but the box scraper will do much better at surfacing your gravel road. Maybe you can get both? You also need to decide which kind of field cutter will best suit your needs. A brush cutter is versitile but doesn't do a pretty finish cut for a lawn. They also can pitch a bowling ball size rock, 50'. Flail cutters are much safer, handle grass or brush but are more expensive. Finish cutters do a real pretty job on grass but won't tackle brush. The most handy implement I know is a loader bucket. There just isn't enough time or space to tell you all the uses for it but once you have one, you won't ever be without it. Firewood, hauling dirt/gravel/rock, lifting things, pushing things.... you name it. For ease of opperation and maintenance, I stick with gas engines. I like diesel but don't opperate my tractor enough for a diesel. If you plan for a weekend warrior tractor or use during real cold weather, stick with gas. I have a Massey Ferguson 2135 and you can look at it on my Tractor Town listing (see gray column at the left, under community) after you get to Tractor Town, look up Tyler Woods. I have a lot of tractor for my money and haven't found a better deal since. It's a working tractor that sees weekly use. Good luck with your purchase. I hope all this helps. I'm sure other posts will fill in what I left out. One more thing, you will want to stick with a brand that is popular in your area of the country. Since you plan to do work with your tractor, you will want parts to be readily available. If you aren't fixing your tractor (sometimes) you aren't working it.
