We don't have Black Snakes here in Minnesota AFAIK, but the beneficial ones here are Bull Snakes. They're better than felines for controlling the rodents. The only trouble is they look a lot like Rattle Snakes and will even coil and vibrate their tales to make you think that they are rattlers. That and finding a 6ft long one is not that uncommon and that's just plain unsettling. The only problem we have ever had with them is that they will steal chicken eggs. This is not a problem as long as you fetch the eggs before dark, once when I was a kid I went to pick up eggs after dark without a flashlight and put my hand right into one coiled up in a nest box. It gives me a chill just remembering that.
