I was burning an 80acre wheat stubble field, had disced a fireguard on 2 sides, other side was plowed ground and the north end ended at a dirt road w/plowed ground on the other side. I started the fire at the south end, then looked back to the north end, saw all those pretty telephone poles sittin' in that end of the field that I had forgotten were there. I jumped back on the tractor and thinks I, I'll outrun the fire to the other end and save those poles. No such luck. My heart was in my throat as I just knew that fire was going to take out a quarter mile of electric line.
Poles didn't burn however, no harm no fowl. I was just 16, so didn't know any better. But I never made that mistake again .
