Overhead valves lead to smaller combustion chambers, hence higher compression. Also can have a smaller surface area for any given combustion chamber volume and so less heat loss. Both can lead to better performance and efficiency. Overhead cams help too because they don't take up space with push rods so an overhead cam engine can be made to breathe easier and get more air in for combustion. The latest 4.6L Ford V-8s put out 15% more torque and horsepower than their previous 5L V-8. A lot of Briggs engines are still flat heads, and get beat for fuel consumption by the more expensive Hondas all the time. Gerald J.
