I'm an old truck and auto enthusiast and receive email updates from an organization known as SEMA.
The organization alerts voters to potential harmful legislation as well as favorable legislation. It might be wise to start following their actions in order to get a feel of what might be needed to protect antique tractoring if I may use that term.

As to compact fluorescent bulbs I installed several quite a few years ago. One is in an outdoor dusk to dawn yard light which I used to replace incandescent bulbs in on the average of every six months. So far I have only replaced one bulb in it. I've lost track when I installed the first as it has been so long ago. While the light level comes up slowly in the cold wintertime it doesn't ever fail to come on.

Inside my home I have two lamps, one on a timer which leaves light on about 8 to 10 hours daily depending upon the time of year. I have never replaced the bulb in that lamp.

In my desk lamp I have replace two of them as they are switched on and off somewhat frequently.

As to mercury in the bulbs it is an extremely small amount that environmentalists would have you believe will render your entire county a super fund clean up site should one break. Not so at all.

While I'm sure we all know that mercury is today viewed as very dangerous how many of you have held mercury in your hands and or played with it?
Probably everyone visiting this board has played with it during youth.

Miners in the 19th century used to to process gold. Yes some streams have dire consequences but mankind didn't die off in one giant kill.

I DO NOT believe that incandescent lamps should be outlawed even though I do believe compact fluorescent bulbs should be used in many lighting situations. Bulbs that will be on for a long length of time should be CFs and those in closets, overhead lights in bedrooms, etc. should remain incandescent.

If incandescent bulbs are legislated out I will stockpile bulbs unless an alternative has come about.

Since I'm spouting off--I believe we should first look to energy conservation. Why, oh why are there any new homes being built with 2 X 4 walls in this day and age of high energy costs?

I strongly believe nothing should be built with less than R 40. I've an old magazine that tells of a builder in upstate New York that insulates homes so well and so air-tight that they need no furnace in them. Cooking, showers, body heat, heat from refrigerators, etc. provide all that is needed. An air to air heat exchanger is required to bring in fresh air. The extra insulation is paid for from furnace cost savings.

Who among you wouldn't like to live in a home that has no heating bill?

Rant over.
