After reading all the Followup and the posted complant, I too agree with the timing being off. You said it is a Simms pump I've only seen one pump like this and it was on a old Fordson. I don't know it the pump has static timing marks. If so check that, however If it starts that hard the pump gear may be a few teeth off, if it's driven off the front gear train. Or is it driven off the camshaft through the oil pump. here too it may be a few teeth off. As for the either its not a good thing to do very often. You can burn valves, and too much could blow the engine. And BE SURE the engine is cranking before spraying and only a very short spray is needed, unless the engine is very tired or very cold out side. And as for timing the pump with the engine running. This a very unsafe pratice I've heard of different rotary pumps blowing off the engine when this was done.
