Maybe this'll help. Alternators produce high voltage AC current that is then run through a rectifier, and regulator (or diodes) that change it to DC. Most alternator run tachs use the AC voltage to run the tach. I'm not sure of the specific voltages used, but this is how it was explained to me. My suggestion would be to take it, both alternator and tach to a good auto/marine electrical shop or rebuilder and let them figure it out for you.
