i use a spray on DRY type graphite lube. it puts on a heavy film that does not weather off easily. also i cover the bar with a tarp when i'm storing the implement. best to put it under a shed if you can. look a your owners manual for adjustments on the knife section. it should get you the specs. for proper adjustments. i'm like you, if it's too much gap at the knife sections, IT WILL PLUG, and if it's too little it will wear the knife prematurely. LOL
