I never drove one, but I have seen them. Back in the late '50s and very early '60s there were several of these exhibited at the Indiana State Fair. In the last 2 or 3 years I have seen a couple rigs of this type in the "antique equipment" area.

I remember one year at the fair when there were at least 6 or 8 such contraptions, all set up to plow. There were a few fellows even marketing the hardware to hook them up, so someone somewhere probably has lots of pictures. (A couple have been posted on the YT site over the last year or so.)

The ones that I remember best were some tandem Farmall Ms, a couple of JD 70s hooked up that way, and a pretty smooth looking pair of AC WD45 tractors, the front of which had a wide front end.

All the ones that I remember had the driver on the front tractor, with levers and linkage going back to operate the rear unit. One of the Farmall units had an angle-iron "basket" that mounted on the drawbar. The rear tractor was simply driven up onto this, and the front wheels secured with chain and binders. The front wheels of the rear tractor were about 6" off the ground, and I think the thing was hitched to a 6 or 7 bottom plow. Some of the rigs had the front wheels off the rear tractor and the front bolster was bolted to the front tractor behind the drawbar.

During this time there were a few contraptions also exhibited that allowed a tractor to be put on "autopilot" for plowing by running a "furrow-follower" ahead of the front of the tractor which controlled the steering. The things had supposedly "fail-safe" switches to kill the ignition if it climbed out of the furrow and started off on its own across the field.

Farm labor was becomming increasingly hard to find in those days, and it just wasn't profitable to pay someone to an hourly rate to plow with a small tractor. Dad and I were farming about 400 acres then, and doing almost all of the field work with an M and Super M. We seriously talked about rigging our 300 Utility to plow without a driver, but never did, feeling that it wouldn't add enough productivity in return for the hassle.

I never heard of any accidents from one of these, but I wouldn't doubt that there were some. The tandem rigs with one large (or two smaller) plows strung out behind took up a lot of room!
