The Toyota Yaris is supposed to have nearly the same drivetrain as the Echo, I believe. I see quite a few of them on the road around here, never driven one though.
For similar size, mileage, and reliability check into the Corolla, Honda Fit, or Civic... If you want to save $$ and have a fuel-efficient reliable car, check out the mid-90's Civic DX or HX, many push 40mpg and are selling for under $6000 for a good one with around 90k miles on it.
As to the comments on little cars being a "death trap" - looks like your daughter walked away just fine. The real death trap is someone driving a big SUV or 3/4 diesel pickup (alone, no cargo or trailer) trying to drink their Starbucks and talk on the cell phone - some of them also trying to apply make-up so they can be even more fake.
