A few years back I was researching biodiesel and ran into a report produced by the U of ID about a study they conducted using raw vegie oil(SVO or straight vegetable oil) in IDI diesels.
At running 100% SVO at 500hrs they found the IDI engines would gum the top piston rings and the injector nozzle seats to where they needed tore down and cleaned.
There conclusion of testing was anything less than a 50/50 mix of SVO/No2 had no extra effect on engine maintance without heating the fuel before injection.
Biodiesel is NOT raw vegie oil but oil that has the glycerin removed or the substance that causes the rings and injectors to plug.
The home-brew biodiesel community contends that first heating SVO or WVO(waste vegetable oil) to 150ºf plus before injecting will also stop piston ring and injector nozzle gumming on DI diesel engines.
I personally will reserve my thoughts on WVO, specificly used fryer oil, use until a few years have passed until WVO has a long time proven track record.
My son, a ASE diesel mechanic, worked at a sod farm where they maintained 400 pieces of diesel equipment and the standard practice was to drop used motor oil into the fuel tanks of the engines that the oil was changed on. He stated that in 6yrs he worked there that He didn't see any adnormal fuel system problems from this practice.
Another interesting read was on Journey Forever.com that tested 15% biodiesel in commerical produced gasoline and home made alcohol fuel in moderen gasoline engines without smoking or any ill side effects.
