DAD Had A 6V/12V Charger(I Still Got It)Bought It At WESTERN AUTO(WIZARD BRAND).He was charging a 6v batt and I flipped it to 12v.It started to boil the electrolyte soon after.It will boil over too.If it is completely Dead,the batt will blow off the top,(I did that.)Now let's see:a battery's voltage is determined by the number of cells it has.Each cell,regardless of size will produced approx.2v.A battery charger runs current through the cells to drive of chemicals from the plates back into solution,so they can react to the plates to give power again.6v will charge 12 volt or 8 volts up to a point,where the chemicals are driven off the plates.It just takes longer.And some of the chemicals may not be driven off because of the lower voltage,but it will charge eventually to the rated capacity.(Unless the plates are sulfated/"clogged")A 12v charger will charge a 6 or 8v batt. but may damage it or you or both,due to the higher voltage going into the batt.
