Reminds me a story my grandfather told me about a guy near hear who got his grain combined that way for several years. First, there was this widow who had in her possesion a 1968 JD 55 (this was in 1970) that she wanted to sell. He borrowed it with intent to buy, but never did. In 1971, he demoed a Case 960, but sent it back. In 1972, he demoed a Gleaner F, but didn't buy it. In 1973, he demoed an Oliver 7300, but sent it back. In 1974, he demoed an IH 715, almost bought it, but said he couldn't get the loan. In 1975, he went to the bankruptcy sale of the guy who bought the Oliver 7300 in fall '73, and brought it home. He cussed it out for 11 years. Then his son bought a brand new JD 6620 and went big time hogwild . . .and then broke.

It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul ...
