Defend a poor product if you wish, but I've had my last Exide battery until I see that they have sufficiently changed such that they're worth buying. I'm not complaining about the service I got from NH. NH has been very good about standing behind the battery with replacement to the limits of the free replacement warranty, but once it gets to pro-rating, it's a waste of time for me. NH's pro rated warranty is nothing more than a scam to keep you buying their batteries. Once you've done the math you figure out that it only takes about 20% more life (at most) from a good battery and you're ahead of anything that you could get from NH's warranty anyway. I've certainly had a couple over the years that were due to charging system issues, and NH backed the dead battery anyway. I can't complain there. What I complain about is the simple fact thay every single 4DLT I've had expires in less than 5 years without fail (usually the first cold snap of the 4th winter), without any deep cycling, or excessive cycling of any sort. You just find them stone dead on a cold morning. Game over. Gr31 maintenance free batteries will fare about a year better than the 4DLT's on average. I've had the cheaper 'fleet branded' Exides that do about 2 years.... compared to the Delco's that I've had that ran for 14 years in a dozer and now going on 5-6 years on the second set. I haven't had the rest of them long enough to see how the new ones will hold up, but the truck has had a set for 4 years that are still strong.
Motorcraft OEM batteries have also been very strong performers here with life spans from 8-10 years on several (all that we've had actually).
Right now I'm content to stay with Delco since I can get them close to home for 30% less money that NH branded batteries, and I don't have a NH dealer closer than 200 miles anymore... so there's really no incentive there to buy from them. Again, the problem is Exide, not NH from my perspective. I've had poor service from Exide batteries where Delco's are now giving good service....
