A insurrance man gave some great advice many moons ago. Insurrance is to protect assets. The more assets you have the more protection you need.
When borrowing money for any adventure, always buy disability insurrance to make the loan payments as there's more chance you'll have injury more than there is dying.
When I retired, I was offered health insurrance at $335/mth to continue my coverage. I didn't have alot of assets that I could loose. The homestead law is a wonderful tool.
We've always been pretty healthy and so has been our family members so what I did is take the $335/mth and bank it for the just incase. Were so far ahead of the game now as our medical costs are less than $1000/yr for both of us. I sure don't have to ask if I can see the Doc I want to see or get refused the medical attention I want.
But you have to use common sence too. We don't take alot of risks. We research our own medical problems before going to the doctor. I just went in to get a boil lanced on my belley and the doc wanted a CT scan before he would lance the boil as my stomach was tender. Well ya it was tender as I had a huge honking pimple 4" in diameter. It sure didn't take rocket sicence to figure that out. It poped on it's own a couple hours latter and with salt soaked compressions it's gone now.
I did raise my libility auto/property insurrance a couple years back as I now have more assets that I want protected.
