I was using a small IH with a hay fork on the 3 pt. to carry logs and stumps to a big hole where I'd dump them. This hole was about 12ft deep and just to the side of a down hill road. The tractor doesn't have parking brakes so I'd park it cross-ways to the road with the fork full of logs hanging over the hole. I'd lower the lift and the logs would usually roll off. Well, they did'nt this time so I CAREFULLY balanced the tractor so I could shove a few off the back of the fork (don't tell me, I know). I could'nt kill the motor and put it in gear because the lift bleeds down too quick. So, as I am at the back of the fork jiggling a log the tractor starts to roll - backward into the hole. I jump up on top of her and grab the wheel just in time to accopany her rapidly and backwards to the bottom of the hole. The tractor "spears" itself to the bottom of the pit and I fly through the back of the seat breaking it out and knocking the wind out of me. I'm alive but the tractor is resting with the head up about 3/4 and with the hay fork stabbed deep into the sand. Cound'nt climb the wall going forward and could'nt back up further or release the fork. Had to dig "tracks" 3 ft down and several feet back so the tractor could roll back. Got rings of blue to purple to yellow bruises a square yard across my butt, legs and back from hit on the seat back. Still, I prefer this stupid experience to the cold chill of the safety police.
