But if there is little or no advantage to a wide front with regard to tipping, why is it that in hilly country almost every farmer with experience prefers the wide front?

You are all missing the point, the pivot point. On a wide front end the pivot point is where the tractor connects to the front end. On a narrow front end the pivot point is where the front wheels contact the ground. Thus having a much lower pivot point, the narrow front end is much less stable.
