The problem with the brakes on my dad's 4400 apparently got started because the sensor that makes the parking brake warning light flash got covered with dust so the light quit flashing when the brake was on.

Then someone would set the park brake, and since the warning light was not flashing forgot took off with the brake still set. The final drives are geared so low that you never know the brake is still on. The brakes eventually get worn so bad they are out of adjustment and they will not stop the combine. Thats why I almost went in the pond.

Leaving the parking brake also creates a fire hazard. The brakes can get hot enough to catch any dust that has accumulated down around the brakes on fire. I know of at least one combine in my county that burned up an entire wheatfield because the operator left the brake on. If his 2,000 gallon nurse tank had not been sitting in a field across the road the guy would have lost the combine too.

After we figured out what the problem was we fixed the brakes and just don't use the parking brake. I leave the machine in gear.
