I've got a 1979 Datsun 280ZX stored inside an old barn - and I can't get the gas drained out of it. I've tried - and I can't find an easy way to do it. I keep thinking that one of these years I'll put plates on it, drive it, and THEN get some new gas into it. So, the gas in the tank is now 6 years old. I starting the engine twice a year and keep on thinking one of these times - it won't run. But so far, it's fine. I put two doses of Stabil in it - as I said - the gas is 6 years old. In regard to the six month thing?? I've got a bunch of winter cars I take off the road every April or May. They get parked in the field and don't get started again until at least November. I don't put Stabil - or anything else into them and have never had a problem with gas going bad. Different blends of gasoline have different life-spans. Also, air-tight fuel tanks make the gas last a lot longer. I suspect temerpature plays a part too. I've got many pieces of gasoline powered equipment with untreated gas that often sits for two years and still work fine. But, if I know something is going to be stored, I add Stabil. At the last engine show I went to - I pulled a tractor out of my barn that had 3 year old gas still in it. It was never treated and I should of drained it. But, I have over 100 tractors, so it's hard to keep up sometimes. The gas was starting to smell like it was turning, but the tractor started right up and ran fine.
