More information would help. You do run into that where the same brand/model starter is used where the starter lays along side the engine or plugs in from the rear. Most can be changed by swapping in the correct armature with the correct commutator to winding offset. That way you get the correct drive splines on the shaft. You also need a drive set up for reverse rotation. I have reversed several by going to the tractor salvage yard and dug through the pile of starter parts to find an armature with opposite comutator to winding offset. If your lucky, this armature will also have the correct drive attached.
