Glow plugs work through resistance. A large amount of currnet passes through them and they heat up, thus heating the fuel and air in the cylinder, making for easier starting. They need to be replaced when they no longer work, which can usually be detected by harder cold starting. To test them, I just put positive 12v dc power to the top electrode and negative to the threads. If it glows cherry red, it works. If not, it must be replaced. Be very careful not to touch it, as it will be extremely hot!
