Officials: Wildland fire sparked by lawnmower

HOOD RIVER, Ore. - A wildland fire in Hood River Saturday evening damaged a vacant mobile home and led to the evacuation of 100 homes but did not lead to any injuries, fire officials said.

The blaze, which started around 4 p.m., grew to more than 45 acres. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from any homes where people live, Hood River city fire officials said. Some outbuildings were also damaged in addition to the double-wide mobile home.

By 8 p.m. Saturday, crews had the fire 95 percent contained and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital for heat exhaustion but was later treated and released.

As of Sunday, crews were still at the scene mopping up and extinguishing hotspots.

Fire Marshall Jim Trammel of the West Side Fire Department determined that a riding lawnmower that malfunctioned sparked the blaze. Fire officials said a 15-year-old boy was mowing his yard when the mower broke down and sparked. Investigators have interviewed the boy. A report will eventually be forwarded to prosecutors, who will decide whether any charges are warranted.

Authorities said the fire was centered in an area bordered by Cascade Avenue to the north, May Drive to the south, Rand Road to the east and Frankton Road to the west. A map of the site of the blaze is here.

The fire did not lead to any lane closures on nearby Interstate 84. However, officials did close the eastbound ramp of exit 62 into Hood River for several hours.
