The biggest enemy of tires is the sun. That is why you see campers with bonnets over their tires. The small cracks in the sidewalls of tires usually come from exposure to the sun and really are not a problem other than looks. The bigger cracks come from the belts of the tire breaking and that means it's useful life is soon over. These cracks usually start at the lug because that is where the most strain is when the tire is pulling.
