I"m using Exxon 15w40 now. For years I used Quaker State HDX 30 in all my diesels. Only switched when I got a diesel pickup and it called for the multi viscosity. When I had the valve covers off for a 4000 hour valve adjustment on the HDX engines they were always clean, even up to the 3rd valve adjustment (12,000 hrs). When I first went to 15w40 I used Rotella, went with the advertising. I was in a couple of different engines at less than 500 hours after a rebuild and they were already getting junk in them on the Rotella. Switched to Delo 400 since thats what my distributor was a dealer for at the time. His comment was Rotella spent all their money on advertising and not on oil additives. I liked the Delo but when he switched to Exxon as his house brand I went with price. Its $100 a barrel cheaper than the next lowest priced brand he carries ($315 for a 55 gallon drum, last week, delivered), Delo, Rotella, and the others are all running right at $450 a barrel.
