I have an 02 DMAX ext cab 4X4 , has 140,000 on it now . Bought it used 2 years ago last spring with 65,000 on it . Know where it came from and have all the service records on it . Nothing has been done to it except for two u-joints . Never been chipped reprogramed etc . I put a 4 inch exhaust system on it last March . I NEVER DID come close to 20 mpg although the previous owner claimed he got as high as 22 when he had it .
Since I have owned it mileage is : 14-16 running around here , 16-18 on longer trips , 9-11 pulling gooseneck trailer 10-16,000 . I run 65-75mph with truck or trailer always . Tried running 60-65 , seemed to help a little , did get 18.5 mpg once . But that's too slow . Truck has plenty of power and has good pickup , cruises nicely at 75 on the interstates .

One thing I have never been able to understand with all these power chips , reprogramers etc is how increasing fuel to give more power can GIVE MORE MPG . I have been playing with diesels turbos injectors etc in my tractor pulling hobby for 35 yrs , the only way you make more power is with more fuel . That means more heat , more egt , more boost and all that . If the engine is designed for so much hp any more will some day do some damage .
